To quantify carbon stocks in mangroves and other wooded wetlands, aboveground carbon reservoirs and underground are divided into components which are measured using specific techniques described in this condensed field manual. Sampling methods are similar to inventory approaches used in mountain forests. However, they have been modified to take into account the special attributes of forested wetlands. Because much of the carbon in these ecosystems appears to be stored underground, special attention has been paid to sampling methods allowing estimates of underground carbon stocks. Field procedures are described in detail.
